The following are job descriptions pertaining to candidates who seek employment as a forestry tech and / or firefighter. These positions demand arduous labor and endurance. Not all duties may be listed, but the duties described will give you an idea of what is expected.
Forestry Tech | Squad Leader
Foreman | Single Rescource boss
Forestry Tech / Firefighter II / Rx Burn Assistant Training Requirements: S-130, S-190, and I-100
Duties:
- Arduous physical fitness required
- Operate hand tools
- Basic Labor: Pile covering, slash piling, chipping, handline construction, hiking, camping.
- Firefighting: Long hours with minimal days off (14-1 or 21-2) R&R may be at a remote location, out of town and away from home.
- Assist in vehicle clean up, hand tool and facility maintenance
- Power tools: Limited to mowers, weed eaters and chainsaws.
- No supervisory responsibility - subordinate to all supervisors
- Report personnel injuries to supervisors
- Report unsafe acts to supervisor
Responsibilities: to keep/maintain the following:
- Personal Equipment
- Issued Equipment
- Company Equipment
Prescribed Fire responsibilities include:
- Construction of fire line
- Ignition – using hand firing devices
- Hold fire within constructed lines
- Assist in mop-up procedures
Additional Responsibility Descriptions:
- If reporting a problem, go through chain of command
- Responsible for tools and gear – Ready to “GO”
- Sharpen tools and return to proper compartment
- Follow all orders given by superiors
- Maintain professional appearance
- Perform all necessary duties in fuels treatment and fire suppression
- Ensure maintenance of equipment – all equipment is clean and ready to go
- Use all equipment with respect
Squad Leader/Driver
Advanced Forestry Tech / Firefighter I - This position requires a signed task book
Training Requirements (minimum):
- S-131, S-201, S-211, S-212, S-216, and L-280
Duties:
- Working leader of group
- Perform advanced maintenance and repairs on chainsaw and other power tools
- Conduct safety briefing
- Daily activity reporting and timekeeping
- Subordinate to Crew Supervisors
- Assure safety policies are adhered to
- Report daily activity
- Operate and maintain vehicle – complete Inspection Reports * Arduous physical fitness required
- Operate hand tools
- Basic Labor: Pile covering, slash piling, chipping, hiking
Responsibilities:
- Personal Equipment
- Issued Equipment
- Small group supervision (3 - 5 personnel) Firefighting:
- Long hours with minimal days off (14-1 or 21-2)
- Assist in vehicle clean up, hand tool and facility maintenance
- Operate power tools and services
- Report personnel injuries to supervisor
- Report unsafe acts to supervisor
Additional Responsibility Descriptions:
- Responsible for assigned crewmen - Make sure during shift everyone is accounted for
- Assistant to Foreman
- Reports any problems to Foreman
- Ensures equipment is organized and clean
- Helps make sure rules are followed and company policy is enforced
- Ensure vehicle fluids are checked every day
- Equipment organized – compartments organized & locked
- Lunches, food and water
Foreman
Supervisory Forestry Tech / Single Resource Boss /Crew Trainee - This position requires a signed task book.
Training Requirements:
- S-131, S-201, S-211, S-212, S-216, and L-280 – Firefighter I
- S-215, I-200, S-200, S-230, S-231, S-234, S-260, S-270, S-290 and First Responder – Crew Boss
Required Experience:
Three to Four years minimum experience with all training
Duties:
- Quality control and production management
- Delegate tasks
- Working supervisor of group
- Oversee module activities
- Single Resource Boss trainee
- Perform advanced maintenance and repairs on chainsaw and other power tools on a weekly basis
- Conduct safety briefing – complete Tailgate Safety Forms
- Daily activity reporting and timekeeping
- Assure safety policies are adhered to
- Report daily activity
- Operate and maintain vehicles
- Arduous physical fitness required – A leader in fitness
- Operate hand tools
- Basic Labor: Pile covering, slash piling, chipping
- Firefighting: Long hours with minimal days off (14-1 or 21-2)
- Assist in vehicle clean up, hand tool and facility maintenance
- Operate and service power tools
- Report personnel injuries

Responsibilities:

- Responsible for squad and activities
- Evaluates employee performance
- Ensures squad equipment is ready to go
- Makes sure employee times are correc
- Enforces all policies and company rules
- All saws are functioning – fix if needed
- Have bar oil
- Keep tools in excellent condition
- Gas for saws and vehicles
- Squad organized / clean / professional / ready to “GO”
- Records fires and employee experience sheetCrew Boss
Single Resource Boss /Crew or Engine
This position requires a signed task book.
Training Requirements:
- S-131, S-201, S-211, S-212, S-216, and L-280 – Firefighter I
- S-215, I-200, S-200, S-230, S-231, S-234, S-260, S-270, S-290 and First Responder – Crew Boss
Responsibilities/Duties
- Overall responsibility of crew and activities
- Records all times and fills out invoices
- Fills out daily activity sheet – (all areas – no exception)
- Evaluates performance of employees, especially Foreman / Squad Boss
- Organizes and outlines project
- Records all production rates
- Enforces all policies and company rules
